The Philippines is reeling from the devastating impact of Typhoon Tino (Kalmaegi), which has left at least 188 people dead and 135 missing across the southern regions, according to the Office of Civil Defense. The catastrophe has displaced nearly half a million people, forcing them to seek refuge in crowded evacuation shelters.
Cebu was particularly hard-hit, with 139 fatalities reported, primarily due to widespread flash floods triggered by the typhoon’s torrential rains. The scale of the disaster prompted President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to declare a state of national emergency on Thursday, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
In response to the crisis, the United States has pledged $1 million in immediate life-saving assistance to support Philippine-led relief efforts. The aid package includes emergency shelter, logistical support, safe water, and sanitation facilities for the hardest-hit communities.
